The Transitional Year Residency at Hillsboro Medical Center is a one-year program that prepares physicians for advanced specialty training.

We offer:

  • Personalized training from highly skilled physicians and faculty
  • Flexible scheduling with options to rotate at multiple hospitals and clinics

  • Opportunities to participate in leadership and scholarly activities

Mission

Our mission is to train a diverse group of well-rounded and resilient physicians with the broad foundational knowledge and skills to provide compassionate, high-quality care to their communities.

We train physicians to be leaders in their respective fields and to meet the needs of an ever-evolving healthcare system. The Transitional Year residency program aims to provide residents with the skills to:

  • Provide high quality, evidence-based care
  • Navigate health and structural inequities
  • Treat patients from diverse backgrounds
  • Practice medicine with empathy and humanism
  • Drive clinical innovation and research
  • Maintain personal health and wellbeing

Our program

The Transitional Year Residency program provides residents with a broad exposure to medical and surgical specialties to prepare them for their advanced residencies and careers.  Residents learn through a mix of challenging core rotations and a variety of electives at both community and academic sites.

The program’s individualized learning experience includes:

  • Foundational skills: Clinical rotations in ambulatory and inpatient medicine, emergency medicine, general surgery, and critical care
  • Strong ties to advanced residency programs at OHSU, including anesthesiology, diagnostic radiology, dermatology, and radiation oncology
  • Specialty tracks to prepare residents for specific subspecialties
  • Participation in scholarship and one-on-one mentoring

Training for the residency program is primarily at Hillsboro Medical Center, a 167-bed hospital with state-of-the-art acute care and surgical suites.  We serve a diverse community in Hillsboro where a quarter of the residents are Latinx and nearly a third speak a language other than English at home.

Hillsboro Medical Center is affiliated with Oregon Health & Science University through the OHSU Health partnership. This provides a number of benefits to our residents, including the opportunity to do certain elective rotations at the OHSU Marquam Hill campus in Portland.

Our program also partners with Kaiser Permanente Westside Medical Center, a 126-bed hospital in Hillsboro (six miles from the Hillsboro campus) where residents will complete several required rotations.
