OHSU Tuality Healthcare is proud to announce the opening of our new Center for Geriatric Psychiatry. We are one of only three acute care psychiatric facilities in the state of Oregon that specializes in geriatrics. Our inpatient unit underwent a complete renovation in 2019 now meeting the highest standards for safety, privacy, patient comfort and technology.
Our team consists of Board-Certified Geriatric Psychiatrists, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Nutritionists and Social Workers. Patients admitted to our unit receive care in a safe, nurturing setting. We round on our patients multiple times per hour with staff on the floor working in direct patient care 24 hours a day.
We treat mood disorders, dementia, anxiety, psychosis and other psychiatric conditions affecting older adults. Our patients receive a complete diagnostic workup including memory testing and the evaluation of general medical conditions that might cause psychiatric symptoms. Our connection to OHSU means our patients have access to top-notch medical and surgical consultation as well as the latest brain-imaging and laboratory studies. We develop a patient-centered care plan that emphasizes behavioral interventions as well as the use of psychotropic medication. We focus on rehabilitation to help our patients achieve the highest possible level of function.
Our daily programs include group activities to promote physical exercise, mental activity and socialization. We communicate frequently with family members involving them in the treatment plan and educating them on what they can do to support their loved one. We assist families in finding appropriate placement and we communicate our recommendations to care providers who will follow the patient after discharge. The Center for Geriatric Psychiatry is pleasant and peaceful environment that is ideally suited for recovery and rehabilitation.
Our new leadership brings many years of experience to the clinic. Medical Director Dr. David Douglas is board-certified in adult psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry and clinical informatics. He believes patient and family goals are the most important part of health care delivery. Dr. Douglas was named to Best Doctors in America for 2019-2020.
Paula Pennington, MHA, MSN, RN is the Administrative Director of the Center for Geriatric Psychiatry. She has been a nurse for 25 years, 15 in nursing leadership. She enjoys designing and implementing access to behavioral services for patients, and is currently a doctoral student for health administration.
Patient admitting will begin in July2019. We are located on the 3rd floor of the Tuality Hospital (335 SE 8th Ave Hillsboro OR 97123).
