Tumor Treatment Fields for Glioblastoma
The Tuality/OHSU Cancer Center offers Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) therapy for adult patients with newly diagnosed or recurrent glioblastoma (GBM). This is a new treatment modality that is non-invasive, has few side effects and can be combined with other effective treatment strategies such as surgery, radiation therapy and systemic chemotherapy.
A New Hope for Brain Cancer Patients
Now Tuality/OHSU Cancer Center has a new tool to fight against glioblastoma, one of the most common and deadly forms of brain cancer. This new FDA-approved treatment called Optune delivers TTFields therapy instead of chemotherapy or radiation. Unlike other traditional treatments, Optune does not enter your bloodstream and has not been shown to affect cells in other parts of the body. Tuality/OHSU Cancer Center was the first cancer center in Oregon to treat patients with TTFields. This therapy has shown in large clinical trials to extend life for patients with GBM.
- TTFields treatment was first approved for patients with recurrent glioblastoma based on evidence from a randomized trial, which showed this treatment was just as effective as chemotherapy, but much less toxic to patients.

- In 2015, the FDA approved Optune for patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma – after completion of radiation therapy – based on evidence from a large randomized clinical trial showing improvement in survival.

- Optune creates an electric field around the tumor to disrupt the growth and reproduction of cancer cells in the brain.
TTFields for Glioblastoma at a Glance
Patients can receive a consultation regarding TTFields therapy using Optune with Dr. Timur Mitin, medical director at Tuality/OHSU Cancer Center. He works directly with patients to develop a personalized plan using their MRI scans. Patients can also choose to work with Dr. Mitin during the course of their treatment or we can help them arrange care closer to home with their oncology providers.
