Pediatric outpatient surgery
OHSU Doernbecher otolaryngologists (head and neck) and pediatric surgeons offer outpatient surgery at Hillsboro Medical Center.
Conditions we treat
- Chronic ear infections: A child’s with bacteria or a virus trapped inside the eardrum causing pain and swelling.
- Obstructive sleep apnea: The soft tissue at the back of a child’s throat blocks the upper airway. This cuts off oxygen for a few seconds until the child wakes up and breathes normally.
- Congenital neck masses: A child has a non-cancerous neck mass that may cause problems with eating, drinking or breathing.
- Chronic sinusitis: A child has an infection or swelling in the sinuses.
- Hemangiomas: A condition where a bright red rubbery bump appears at birth.
- Vascular birthmarks: A cluster of blood vessels that vary in color and size.
- Hernias: An internal organ or tissue pushes up through the wall of muscle. Most hernias are between the chest and the hips.

Pediatric Otolaryngology
Our otolaryngology (head and neck) doctors perform outpatient surgeries including:
- Tympanostomy tubes: Small tubes that are surgically placed into your child’s eardrum to drain fluid and reduce ear infection.
- Adenotonsillectomy: A surgery to remove both the adenoids and tonsils if your child has obstructed or short pauses in breathing, acute tonsillitis, and obstructive sleep apnea.
- Endoscopic sinus surgery: A procedure to remove blockages in the sinuses.
- Ear surgery: Repair of perforated eardrums (tympanic membrane perforation).
- Excision congenital neck masses: Removal of a lump that is present at birth (thyroglossal duct cysts and branchial cleft cysts).
- Excision hemangiomas/dermoid cysts: Removal of bumps or lumps that formed on or in the skin.
- Skin lesions requiring anesthesia: Treatment of a patch of skin that doesn’t look like the surrounding area.
Pediatric surgery
Our general pediatric surgeons perform outpatient surgeries including:
- Biopsy of rectum: A surgery to take a tiny piece of tissue from the rectal area to test it for nerve cells.
- Circumcision: A procedure to remove the foreskin covering the tip of the penis.
- Dilation of anal or rectal stricture: A procedure that gently stretches the anus to prevent scar tissue forming after certain types of surgery.
- Epigastric incisional hernia repair: Surgical repair of fatty tissue that is bulging out around the abdomen.
- Umbilical hernia repair: Surgical repair of a bulge near the belly button.
Inpatient pediatric unit
The pediatric unit at Hillsboro Medical Center provides a high-level of care for sick children in a specially designed family-friendly space. You’ll find:
- Doctors and nurses who are specially trained in treating children.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Our level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides expert care for babies born 32 weeks or later that need a little extra help getting started. The NICU keeps your care closer to home, family and support network.
